Connect an aquarium filter, then check power and salinity
Follow the warning you actually have. Connection, electricity, capacity and salinity can fail at different points in the same setup.
The short answer
Connect the Filtration Network to the node on the Aquarium Staff Gate, then check the filter’s power and the network’s capacity. Salinity is a separate setting inside Edit Filtration Network. A filled tank does not prove it has working filtration.[1][2]

Connect the tank before tuning the water
GamerBlurb’s 13 October walkthrough places the aquarium connection on the staff gate, rather than on a barrier wall. The 16 October indexed player question about insufficient filtration points to the same node; that Reddit page was not fully retrievable in our direct check.[1][3]
- Select the Water Filter and enter Edit Filtration Network.
- Trace the connection to the Aquarium Staff Gate’s node. A filter standing beside a tank is not evidence of a connection.
- Check that the filter has working electricity before comparing capacity.
- Read the network’s Filtration Rate against demand; a connected but undersized network is a different problem.
Use the warning disappearing and the displayed network state as checkpoints. Do not treat the colour or proximity of a building as proof that the water is being processed.
Choose the branch that matches the warning
| Observation | Next check | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| No connected filter | Follow the network to the staff-gate node.[1] | Changing salinity while the tank is not on the intended network. |
| Water Filter Not Powered | Inspect the power supply and placement, separately from pipe connectivity.[1][2] | Assuming a visible pipe also supplies electricity. |
| Insufficient filtration | Compare the displayed capacity and demand after connecting and powering the filter.[1] | Adding unrelated water pumps to an aquarium without checking its network. |
| Connected, powered, wrong water type | Open Edit Filtration Network and inspect the Freshwater/Brackish/Saltwater selection.[2] | Treating temperature as a substitute for salinity. |
Nordic Fjords: power, salinity or placement restriction?
In laurenpatriciachristy’s 13 October Steam report, the tutorial allowed pipes but the filter was unpowered; rebuilding later produced an “outside placement area” message. bluestarbead reported placing an air turbine nearby and finding the freshwater-to-saltwater toggle through Edit Filtration Network. The questioner eventually restarted Career and reported that the second attempt worked.[2]
That is one recovery report, not a reason to restart every zoo. If the object can be placed, check connection and power first. If placement itself is rejected, keep that message separate from water settings. Save before retrying a tutorial: the source’s restart repeated earlier progress.
Check the result before rebuilding
After each change, revisit the same tank and warning. Record which message cleared, whether salinity can now be selected, and what remains. If only temperature is wrong, use the water-temperature controls. If the tutorial stops accepting input as you place its gate, use the gate-step workaround.
We have not tested these builds. The connection walkthrough is third-party guidance; the tutorial recovery is a launch-window player report with an unknown build.
